Underneath The Mistletoe

By Rebecca Goings

One

Tall, dark, sexy, cheerful, annoying ... all words that described the handsome, sable-haired Jeremy Kitteridge. Perfection on two legs, a Greek god descended from on high, he was the man you wanted to write home about. Yet, he was just the kind of man that scared the hell out of Faith Jenkins.

Her world had been stable and solid as a rock only three months ago, working at Ricardo's, the ritzy department store in downtown Portland. She'd even managed to buy her own house on the west side. But nothing could have prepared her for the man who moved in next door to her soon after. Almost ruthless with his charm, threatening to rock her world on its axis, he even had dimples, damn him. Her own personal weakness with regards to men.

It all started with a few lazy smiles as he waved at her from his driveway. It wasn't long before smiles became small talk whenever he caught Faith outside as she watered her lawn. But he was just too happy for her tastes, grinning often with his eyes sparkling.

And now that it was getting on toward Christmastime, he simply wouldn't stop talking about the holiday. He asked her about her plans, about what gifts she was going to buy, and the man even had the audacity to ask her out on a date to a Christmas party. It was all she could do not to laugh in his face.

Faith hated Christmas. It was common knowledge in her department at Ricardo's that she was a Scrooge, refusing to even wear the festive Santa hats that were passed around. It didn't help that her parents had never celebrated the holiday or that her previous boyfriend, Henry Linden, had dumped her just about a year ago right before the big day. No, Christmas was definitely not a jolly holiday for Faith.

"You sure you won't change your mind about the party?" Jeremy smiled at her as they both stood on her lawn one cold December morning. His dimples deepened. She swore he had them just to vex her.

"I'm sure, Jeremy. I'm sorry, but Christmas just isn't my thing."

"A pity, really," he said, continuing to smirk at her. "Christmas is my favorite day of the year."

Clearing her throat, Faith turned away to hide her blush. Damn the man. She had a suspicion he knew exactly what he was doing to her. Her heart was practically palpitating in her chest, and her hands shook almost violently. Exactly the reaction she was trying to avoid.

She had seen him outside through her front window as he scraped the icy windows of his pristine black BMW that morning. She'd sighed inwardly, knowing full well he'd accost her once she left her front porch. But she was already late for work, so there'd been no way to avoid his devilish dimples.

"Look, I'd love to stay and chat about the wonderful merriment that is Christmas Day, but I'm seriously late for work here, Jeremy, so if you don't mind..."

"By all means." He bowed, extending his hand toward her car as if giving her leave to go. "I'll simply ask you again later this evening."

With a dramatic sigh, Faith marched to her car and fumbled for the keys in her purse. She didn't like the turmoil he stirred in her one bit, and the sooner she could race down the road and out of his sight the better. It was bad enough knowing his bedroom was only a few yards from her own.

"Have a good day then, Faith!" he called out as he trudged back over to his car.

What the hell would it take for that man to take no for an answer? Well, she didn't plan to stick around and find out. Then she noticed the windows on her tan Toyota Camry were just as icy as Jeremy's and almost howled with frustration. She didn't own an ice scraper, and she'd be damned if she'd use one of her credit cards to do the job.

Gnashing her teeth together, she started the car and cranked the defroster, but the air coming out of the vents was colder than the morning chill, so she knew it would take forever to warm up enough for the frost on the windows to melt. Groaning in defeat, Faith crawled out of her car and called out to her aggravating neighbor.

"Jeremy!"

"What?" He whipped around so fast that he lost his grip on the scraper, and it clattered down his driveway.

"I need to borrow your thingy!"

"My what?"

Pointing and waving her hand in exasperation, Faith shouted, "Your thingy!"

"My thingy?" He tossed her a suggestive smile.

If Faith hadn't already been seething, she would've laughed at the absurdity of his tone. "Your scraper!"

"Oh, this?" He walked slowly to where his scraper lay in the driveway.

"Yes!"

"What'll you give me for it?"

Great, just great. He wanted something as payment? She should have known better.

"How about I won't give you a black eye?"

"Ouch, Faith." He grinned, striding across the lawn. "I would have just asked for a kiss."

That slammed her heart into overdrive. "Jeremy..." she began, but he held out the scraper and shook his head.
