The hammer of Old Man Haber rang as it drove the nail into the driftwood statue in front of Able's house. I couldn't see it clearly from where I was, there being people in front of me, but that didn't matter. I'd seen the statue before--four nails rusted into the wood below a sad-eyed face--and I'd already heard the words. Only now there were five nails, one still shiny from Old Man's hammer.
Pa stood next to me, leaning against our house, and Ma was sitting down on the porch next to his knees. My sister Judy sat in the next to Ma. Over on the other side of Old Man, the river ground on rocks. It had risen nearly to Able's house and statue, eating away at the shore.
Fishface Fowler nudged my shoulder.
"Yeah?" I said.
"I got some sugarcake. Want some?"
I stuck out my hand and he put some in it. I didn't like to look at Fishface, even though he was my best friend. He had bulging eyes and his lips stuck out. He still didn't have any hair on his body except his head, and he was a season older than I was. I didn't have any hair on my face, but I'd grown it other places. I used to think that he was related to the fish Old Man Haber talked about in the Abletale, the ones that came with the flood. Pa told me different.
