Charon tapped skeletal fingers on the gunwales as he stood at the head of the gangplank waiting for the last passenger to board. The last was a fat mortal with rubbery white skin, like a slug, who whistled a happy tune Charon didn't recognize. The boatman was annoyed at the mortal's impertinence and because he didn't recognize the tune.
The passenger had a patch of white hair in the center of his chest that Charon grabbed in bony fingers as he passed. The whistling turned to a yelp.
"What's that tune, mortal?" Charon hissed.
"Hey, lemme loose," the fat man whined.
Charon complied with obvious reluctance. The mortal muttered thanks. Then: "Bridge on the River Kwai."
"What?"
