6.00am. East wing of Royal King Albert Hospital, opposite Sidney Harbour. "One bad fall," DCI Matt East says, a ghost of a frown on his face. His upper lip twitches, a staccato lift at the left edge. Another crap day, he thinks. First time that goddamn lip tweaked, his mother passed. Next it twitched, and Glenda was gone.
He scrutinises, without touching, shards of glass merged with splinters of wood on a crimson-spattered gravel. Blood trails tell no big story; at first glance he knows.
He wonders at the surroundings and the possibilities.
"Hell of a way to die," he says to himself.
6.13. Matt's eyes feel dry and tired. Things aren't great at work; DNA botches each case he touches. A quiet morning breeze, shifting and sporadic wind, worries his hair. He surveys the ground, and abruptly straightens.
No, I won't speculate.
