"It's the most romantic wedding of the year. Probably the most romantic wedding of the century." Iris peeked out of the kitchen door as the bride and groom took the floor for their first dance. "At least it's the most romantic wedding I've ever seen." "If you don't get back in here and start doing your job, it may be the last wedding you'll ever see." Iris felt Claudia grab the back of her uniform and hauled her into the kitchen. Claudia was her step-sister. Her older step-sister. Her older, wicked, step-sister. Her older, wicked, ugly... "And don't think I don't know what you're thinking, little sister." Claudia shot her a look of exasperation. "For once, can't you cast me as something other than the evil crone in your little fantasies?" "I'm sorry, Claudia." She folded her sister in a hug. Claudia was older, by nearly a dozen years. Technically, they were half sisters, but Claudia was more like a second mother. She'd helped Iris through her teenage years and held her when she cried after breaking up with her boyfriends. It was Claudia who'd rescued the family catering business from impending bankruptcy after her father's death. If Claudia sometimes looked less than her best,, it was because she was overworked, full of worries,, and weary. Iris blamed herself for at least some of the gray in her sister's hair. "Come on, little sister." Claudia's smile made her look ten years younger. "You're the pretty one, so take this tray of champagne out and charm the upper crust into giving us some repeat business."
