He doesn't know how she died, or why.
He didn't kill her.
But here she is, shameless as sin, palely lit by a glow of sensor lights on his porch. One knee is twisted beneath her sprawled body along a hedge dappled with pink and white spring blooms from a creeping plant. The other faces east.
Minutes glide before he realises it is raining. Given the wet on the ground, it has been raining a while now. Branches groan, leaves whistle amidst a tongue of lightning. Another rocket speeds through the moon's soft glow.
Nick March's initial reaction is a certain startle. Then disbelief. Now, acceptance wades in. He stares at her wide-eyed through the rain. A man's got to make a quid, he thinks.
But he is running a deadly game. One that carries risks, no rules.
