eBook Description: After centuries of exile, the Dwarfs have returned to Gorsk mountain. Not all dwarfs are created equal; Oksnar's talents don't lie with metalwork or craftsmanship, but he does have a way with animals, particularly large animals. While 'officially' on sentry watch for trolls, Oksnar spots a bear for the first time and becomes determined to master this amazing creature several times his size, even if it kills him.

Oksnar the Shaggy, youngest of the dwarven sentries, surveyed the valley below looking for trolls. Other sentries had spotted several over the last few days, leading their teams of troll guards down the mountain in pursuit. Oksnar had not, and the members of his troll guard, Petrin and Birk, remarked on it daily. Oksnar feared today would only bring more of the same.
He sat upon a wide bench carved from a jagged obsidian outcropping two thirds up the northern face of Gorsk mountain. With both hands he clutched a ring of beaten bronze larger than his head, and peered through its center. Runemaster Threm had incised the ring with glyphs of far-seeing two days before their expedition to reclaim the mountain arrived, and a team of sentries had kept up a constant watch since.
The expedition had completed its trek in winter, seizing the ancient mountain stronghold amidst ice and snow. Now they labored to reopen each level and tunnel, purging the foul creatures that trespassed in dwarven halls. Outside the mountain, the practice was much the same. Spring had finally come, and with it the best time to catch trolls as they awoke from caves of cold slumber. Oksnar stared intently through the bronze ring, and though he could study the individual leaves of trees if he so desired, there were simply no trolls to be seen. But something else had caught his interest. A large, dark shape ambled back and forth under the trees, from cave mouth to nearby stream. Oksnar had spied a bear.
He had never seen one before. None existed in the lands to which his ancestors had fled twelve hundred years ago. He knew them only from occasional mention in songs and stories, and for years he had dreamed of seeing one.
Now, led by Prince Agni, the dwarves had reclaimed their lost home. Although barely fifty years of age, Oksnar had been named to the team of watchers who constantly searched the mountainside and the valley below for threats of attack or invasion. He held the position by right of heritage. His thrice great grandfather had sat upon the same black glass centuries before, earning honor for his family line.
