Chapter One

"Hey, boss. You've got to see this."

Donovan Klasek looked up to see his night shift bartender gesturing to him. "Can't it wait?"

"No. That new waitress I hired while you were gone, she's arguing with Lewis."

He pushed away from his desk and stood up. "Damn. Did he grab her ass? I told him to keep his hands off my waitresses."

Roscoe shook his head. "Nothing like that. He hasn't touched any of them since Margie lit into him a couple of weeks ago. Lewis made the mistake of saying that Jackson Klasek is a better quarterback than his older brother, Donnie, ever could be."

Donovan wasn't surprised. He had spent ten years playing pro ball. Most of the time he'd played while he was injured. Finally, after the fourth knee surgery, he'd called it quits because he hadn't wanted to end up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Jake had followed in his footsteps and in only his second season, his younger brother was taking his team to the Super Bowl.

"What's her problem?"

"Just listen," Roscoe whispered as they went out into the main room.

Donovan was struck by how quiet it was. The only conversation being held was between Lewis, a long-haul trucker, and a tall redhead with pale skin and snapping blue eyes. Lust hit him between the legs and he almost doubled over from an instant hard-on. He forced his mind to focus on the argument and not the waitress' body.

"Don't you dare tell me that Jake Klasek is a better quarterback than his brother." She poked Lewis in the chest.

"Jake's going to the big game in his second season. Donnie never got there," Lewis pointed out.

Donovan frowned. The one thing he would always regret was never going to the Super Bowl as a player.

The waitress waved that comment aside. "Big deal. Look at the stats for their rookie seasons. Last year Jake threw for twenty touchdowns. He completed only forty percent of his passes. That's a great rookie season, but it's to be expected because Jake has the best receiving tandem in the pros today."

All the men looked stunned by the stats rolling out of those plump lips.

"In his rookie season, Donnie played in half of the games. He threw for thirty touchdowns and completed over fifty percent of his passes. All the while he was throwing to a receiving corps that was slower than a two-legged dog."

He winced. He didn't think Roberts or Jefferson would like to be told that.

"The saving grace was they had the best hands in the game. If Donnie was scrambling, they'd come back to him and he'd pitch it. They always caught it for him."

"Yeah, well. He was hurt a lot." Lewis didn't seem to be thinking fast enough.

"Sure he was. He wasn't Superman. If you had three-hundred pound men tackling you on every play, you'd be hurt too. His body wore out. His team paid a lot of money to get a great quarterback, then did nothing to protect him." The woman shook her head.

Donovan leaned over and asked Roscoe, "What's her name?"

"Johnni with an 'i.'"

"Johnni?"

Roscoe nodded.

"Johnni, what about the fact that Jake's team led the league in rushing?" Donovan wasn't sure why he wanted to enter the discussion.

She waved an indifferent hand. "Heck, my grandmother could rush for two hundred yards a game behind that offensive line and she uses a walker."

Everyone laughed. Johnni smiled and pointed to her watch. "Hey, Lewis, you better head home or Margie will come looking for you."

Lewis nodded. "You'll be over this week?"

"Yep, I told Margie I'd come and change the brakes for her since you'll be gone." Johnni stood on her tiptoes and kissed the trucker on the cheek. "I'll keep an eye on her until you get back."

"Thanks, Johnni." Lewis nodded at Donovan and headed out.

Johnni laughed and headed back to the bar where Roscoe was standing beside a tall, sun bleached blonde man. There was something familiar about him. A full body shiver raced over her as his grass green eyes studied her as if she was the newest touchdown play in his playbook.

The closer she got to the stranger, the hotter her body grew. Everywhere his eyes touched her, she tingled and her cheeks flushed. A smile tipped the right corner of his mouth as if he knew exactly what he was doing to her.

Lord, she loved good-looking men who knew they were every woman's fantasy. She didn't have any use for men who pretended to be humble because it was what they thought women wanted. She admired a man who didn't play games and wasn't anything other than what she saw when she looked at him. She shook her head and grinned at the man as she approached the bar.

"Hey, Roscoe, I need three Buds in a bottle, a Jack and Coke, and a Long Island Iced Tea." She set her tray on the counter as she ordered.

"Sure, Johnni. I want to introduce you to the boss. He was outta town when I hired you." Roscoe gestured to the blonde man. "Johnni Aitken, this is Donovan Klasek. Boss, this is your newest waitress, Johnni with an 'i.'"

She knew she looked like a complete idiot with her mouth hanging open and her face as red as her hair. Not only had she ogled her boss, she showed the most gorgeous man she'd ever seen what a geek she was.

Holding out her hand, she said, "Mr. Klasek, it's nice to meet you."

Donovan took her hand and shook it. She was sure it was just her imagination that he held on to it a little longer than was proper. "Please call me Donovan. The pleasure's all mine." He let go of her hand and gestured towards the main bar floor. "Where did you learn all those stats?"

"Well, when you're your daddy's only child and he's a huge football fan, you learn some things along the way." She smiled and shrugged.

"He taught you well if you can quote that stuff without thinking."

Roscoe put the bottles and drinks on the counter. She was glad for the distraction from Donovan's eyes because she thought there was interest in them and she knew better than that. Men like Donovan Klasek were never interested in curvy redheads who knew more about football and cars than fashion and make-up. Not that she didn't know about those things. Her mother hadn't let her grow up a complete heathen. It was just that she didn't care about that stuff as much as she did the things her father had taught her. She put the order on her tray and picked it up with ease.

"When you're named after Johnny Unitas, you have to live up to the name, right?" She winked at him and sauntered away.

Donovan took a deep breath and forced his gaze away from Johnni's ass. Roscoe smiled at him and quirked an eyebrow.

"Something else, ain't she?" Roscoe polished the glasses.

"I'd have to agree with you on that. Is she really going to go to Margie's this week and change the brakes for her?" Donovan couldn't keep his eyes off her as she moved through the crowd.

"Sure she is. Lewis doesn't want Margie doing anything like that now that she's pregnant. And they can't afford to go to the local shop to get it done. Also, it makes him feel better to know someone's going to be checking up on her." Roscoe nodded towards Johnni. "Instead of being jealous of her, Margie likes her. Not sure how it happened, but Margie doesn't have a problem with Lewis coming in now."

"Hmm..." Donovan sighed. His body wanted to stay out in the barroom and stare at his new waitress for a while, but there were bills to pay since he had been gone for several weeks watching Jackson compete in the playoffs. "I have to finish the bills, Roscoe. Call me if you need any help."

"Sure, boss."
