Introduction The strokes of the pen need deliberation as much as the sword needs swiftness.--Julia Ward Howe---- Every book that anyone sets out on is a voyage of discovery that may discover nothing. Any voyager may be lost at sea, like John Cabot. Nobody can teach the geography of the undiscovered. All he can do is encourage the will to explore, plus impress upon the inexperienced a few of the dos and don'ts of voyaging.--Wallace Stegner--Meet The Muse Greetings! I'm excited to be going on your writing adventure. We have miles of plains, lakes, rolling hills, and distant mountains to cover. Take off your backpack and get comfortable for a bit. Pull up a stump while I stoke the fire to take the chill off this damp, cloudy day. Not sure how you found your way to this place? Ah, yes, not to worry. Over the years, I've taken this journey many times. I am Esumera, muse to the muses and any journeying writer, and I'll be your guide. This delightful creature is Mystique. I pulled her from the raging waters of a flash flood. She was the smallest, wettest kitten I'd ever laid my eyes on. Didn't even know that she was black and white until I cleaned her. From that first day forward we've never been apart. On occasion, we might run across a few more of my friends to help with parts of the journey. Never know who might drop by to pay a visit or collect on a promise. Journey, you ask? What journey? Get comfortable and I'll tell you a tale. Eons ago, when gods walked the earth, people spent dark evenings sitting around fires for warmth, security, and entertainment. The storyteller was popular and sometimes would enhance tales with a song or two: Bard or storyteller, it's difficult to keep the two apart. Tharie was such a person. He enchanted young and old with his words and occasional music. His journey was a life's journey. This entertainer traveled many paths and had many guises: he was son, brother, nephew, grandson, story maker. Physically he traveled no more than twenty miles from his place of birth, but mentally he traveled the world, and from that fertile imagination, grew spell-binding stories. Tharie crafted engaging tales causing listeners to walk with the characters, run with wild horses, and feel the pain of those in distress. People were drawn into the story and became the story. This master storyteller's hypnotic labyrinth of words transported his audience from the mundane reality of the world into the magic alternative realities with the skilled use of language. His goal, as he traveled the storyteller's path, was to be the best at what he loved. He was open to finding new paths to improve his story telling skills. Are your goals any different? What about this writing journey you are about to undertake: Do you know where your ultimate goal lies? What you might need to take with you? Or what you might encounter? I see you eying me. Do I look too old to make such a journey with you? Don't let my white hair and wrinkled skin fool you. I can keep up with the likes of you. As I said, I'll be your guide on this journey. We'll search the depths of your mind, the recesses of your soul, and the warmest places in your heart. To become a writer is to know: the plight of the man across the street who was laid off today, the woman living on the other side of the world grieving the death of her young son, the passion of first love, the heartbreak of losing someone you've known all your life, or the joy of the birth of a child. Sweep the reader along with you on the journey, to participate in the character's life. Your first job as a writer is to immerse yourself into your character's life and then translate the experience into the written word. Your second job is to absorb your reader into the character's journey. And, who am I? Who thinks she can guide your writing journey? What right have I to hold the light in guiding your way? I am Esumera, long-time muse to the muses. My loves include teaching and writing. Writing embraces both art and craft, magic and mundane. Your muse will guide you through the art of writing and nudge you into the direction of becoming a master/mistress of your craft. Writing comes from your mind, your heart, and your soul. I provide a light. You provide the passion. Do these words sound familiar? I always wanted to be a writer, but never had time enough to write. I was busy. Oh, I read many books, mostly fiction and after each one I'd tell myself: I can write a story as great as this one. But I didn't pick up a pen or do anything to improve my writing skills. I didn't give myself time to enjoy and revel in my passion. Did that sound like you? Or the you of your past? You starve yourself when you ignore your passion. Your muse grows hungry and weak. Write as often as you can. You deserve to be the best writer you can be. If you don't yet know the muse living in you, part of your journey will be to search her out. If you're already in touch with your muse, you'll discover how you can keep her close to you day after day, as you grow into the writer you are destined to become. Enough chitchat. We need to be off before the sun sets. Grab your pack and walk with Mystique and me. We begin your journey now. Ready?
