"All in all, I would have to say that this anthology is lovely. All three writers have proven to be exceptional authors. If there happens to be a Brides And Bouquets 2007, I will definitely be on the lookout for it!"--Kristal Gorman, Romance Reader at Heart

CHAPTER ONEWhitney Adams worked on the top floor of the tallest building in Cecil Falls, Maryland, which wasn't saying much for the size of the buildings in town. On a clear day, she could almost see the Chesapeake Bay out her office window. If she stood on her tiptoes, squinted and shaded her eyes. Today there would be no view other than the dreary dark clouds. The Weather Channel's latest report showed the entire east coast was socked in by rain clouds. It wasn't just raining, it was Niagara Falls out there. "Your umbrella is dripping on my foot." Whitney moved the offending umbrella and flashed an apologetic smile at the wooden-voiced complainer. From the frozen lemon expression on the woman's prune face, Whitney figured she'd failed. Just as well, as the woman strode out of the stuffed elevator car when it stopped at the second floor. With fewer people to jockey for space, Whitney set the plastic bag filled with books at her feet. Her stomach grumbled in protest at her choice to spend her lunch hour at her sister Sukie's bookstore rather than eating. Third floor. With the exception of a tall man in the back corner and Whitney, everyone filed out at this stop. Cool fresh air circulated in the empty spaces. Whitney took a deep, cleansing breath. Relaxation. A novel concept, especially after these past nine months. At last the feud between her oldest sister and her younger sister might be ending soon. Well, maybe feud was too strong a descriptor. Cold war? Perhaps. Zandra, the youngest Adams sister, had married their oldest sister's boyfriend, Tom Perkins. Now there was a waste of space and air. Whitney couldn't stand him. In fact, she'd often wondered what her sisters saw in him. Sukie, understandably, had been heartbroken when Tom left her for Zandra. The close-knit Adams family felt the tension between the two sisters. Thank heavens for David Ballard. Whitney's most fervent desire in life was to meet a man as spectacular as David. Now that Sukie was happy again, and Zandra was relieved that their oldest sister had no desire whatsoever to steal Tom back--as if!--the family could heal. A popping sound brought Whitney out of her ruminations. Overhead, the lights flickered before they went out altogether. The elevator jerked to a halt. Whitney stumbled backwards. "Oomph!" Whitney pulled her elbow away from the man's rock-hard abdomen. "Sorry." "You okay?" He steadied her with strong hands. "Lost my footing, but I'm fine. You? I know I have a sharp elbow." Whitney wrapped her arms around her middle as she turned to face him. The formerly welcome cool air chilled her through her rain-soaked coat. "I'll recover." In the darkness, Whitney couldn't see his face, but she didn't need to in order to hear the wryness dripping off his two short words. "Must be some storm, to knock the power out. We may be here a while. I'm Brad Wright." "Whitney Adams." The lights flickered on. They were dim, but on. The elevator lurched. This time, Brad steadied her with one hand on her shoulder before she could fall into him again. She braced herself against the side of the elevator. "So much for the generator actually making this beast move," he grumbled. He removed his hand from her shoulder to retrieve his cell phone from an interior pocket. "Location?" He paused, his shrug and quick head shake indicated he didn't know the address. Whitney quickly rattled it off. Two minutes later, Brad snapped the phone shut. "We aren't the only people stuck in an elevator right now. We're something like thirteenth on the list of those who need to be rescued." "I didn't realize there were thirteen elevators in town," Whitney said. Brad laughed. Good. He seemed tense to her, and she didn't want to deal with a heart attack while stuck in the tiny elevator. A tiny elevator that kept getting tinier and tinier by the nanosecond. She fanned her face, to help circulate the air she breathed. "You okay? You look green. Could be the lighting in here, though." "Claustrophobic," she admitted. "Well, in special circumstances. Like when I can't get out of the really small space." Whitney's knees wobbled. Noticeably. "You should sit down before you faint." He grasped her upper arms, helping her to the floor. The elevator shook just a bit when Brad joined her. "Good thing the light's too dim to illuminate how filthy this floor must be," Whitney said. "I'm washable." Heat radiated from her cheeks as she tried to keep a naughty picture from forming in her mind in response to his comment. Oh dear. How depraved, thinking such thoughts about a stranger. An incredibly handsome stranger who was just as stuck here as she was. "You actually went out into the storm? Shopping for ... books?" The plastic rustled under his hands when he smoothed it to read the bold lettering on the side. "Cozy Corner Bookstore?" "My oldest sister owns it," Whitney explained. "She bought it right after she graduated from college." Half an hour later, she stopped talking about her family. "Sorry." "Your family sounds intriguing," Brad answered. "You're lucky to have them." "Sometimes." Whitney sneezed. "Your coat is soaked. You should take it off before you're chilled to the bone." "Too late. I've been cold for a while now." Her elbow got stuck when she tried to squirm out of the coat. She winced when her arm whacked the wall. Then shivers set in, seizing her with tremendous enthusiasm. "Come on. May as well be sensible." Brad shifted to the right as he pulled her towards him. Resistant until his body warmth seeped through her, Whitney hoped no one would ever catch her sitting in a stranger's lap as her tension eased.
