"I was personally struck by the skill with which Cynthia handled aliens, and made my fearsome and dimly sketched Ya-men (from The Winds of Darkover) into believable characters. The standard fictional techniques can be learned without much trouble; the ability to tell a story and make the reader believe in it is something which must be inborn in a young writer. And this, I firmly believe, Cindy McQuillin has in full measure."--Marion Zimmer Bradley, author and editor

She had just loosed the other sack from her belt and stooped to pluck up a handful of feverwort from a shady place near the stream when she heard a sharply keening cry. It was faint, seeming to echo from deep in the forest on the edge of which the stream ran. Slowly she rose, listening intently for another cry, but she heard no such sound; rather, almost too soft to hear, came a pitiful mewling whine, as if some creature were in terrible pain.
She stood frozen in indecision. She had been warned repeatedly, as had all the children, that she must never enter the deep forest. There were dangers that lurked there in the forms of great carnivorous beasts, or worse, so that even the adults would not willingly venture into it. Living all of her life beneath its awesome shadow, Caselin had a great fear of the forest. Still she could not bear the sound of a creature in pain.
