I dressed very carefully for the funeral. I wanted to look
immaculate, but a little bit sexy, because that was what he had
always liked about me: the businesslike shell with the soft
centre. But obviously I didn't want to give anything away. So
it was a severe grey suit with a velvet scarf tucked into the
neck, my hair loose instead of scraped back into its usual
chignon, and dainty suede slingbacks instead of the killer court
shoes I usually wore to work. And stockings. Not hold-ups;
proper stockings with a suspender belt. I knew Mark would
have appreciated this touch. He used to say it was every
woman?s duty to wear stockings. I suppose that makes him
sound a bit sexist. Well, he was, to be honest. Perversely, it
was what I found attractive about him. He was so
unashamedly provocative. Yet charming. Very, very
charming.
Mark had been the rising star in our firm: to say his ascent
had been meteoric was putting it mildly, and it was commonly
accepted that he'd single-handedly saved the company from
bankruptcy. His methods weren't conventional, nor, many
suspected, were they always entirely scrupulous - he was what
has become known as a maverick. A ruthless, risk-taking
workaholic. It wasn't so surprising that he'd fallen asleep at the
wheel. I'd always worried he was going to burn himself out in
his quest to fit everything into his life - myself included.
No-one at work knew about us. I was as serious about my
career as he was about his, and public knowledge of our
liaison would have been the kiss of death for both of us. I worked in the PR department, and I'd taken him out to lunch in
order to write a profile on him for circulation amongst the
trade magazines. I'd only scheduled in an hour for the lunch. I
was fairly certain I could get all I wanted out of him over a
Caesar salad and a glass of Evian.
After two hours and three glasses of Chablis, I called my
assistant to say I wouldn't be back that afternoon ?
