Who summons me? The demand roared through her mind like a torrent of wind. Around her the world seemed to tremble and shimmer, but she held her ground, head high. "It is I, Hamli, your daughter," she replied. "I have need of a favor." The ground beneath her thrummed with impatient inquiry. "The chosen of my brother Parri has stolen his knife, and I must destroy it before his soul can pass on. I seek the one called Soela, but cannot find her without help. Great Forest Spirit, I humbly beg you to allow me passage through your realm, vowing that I seek only to set the balance right once again." A sudden silence enveloped her, and it seemed almost as though the world held its breath for the space of a heartbeat as her soul was weighed and measured. Then the wind soughed through the trees, and its sound was the voice of the Forest Spirit whispering through her mind. So be it, daughter. You may trespass for this purpose. Then, as quickly as it had manifested itself, the presence was gone. Hamli's body sagged, drained of all nerve. She was almost giddy with exaltation. She could scarcely believe she'd succeeded, but she had to act quickly. Settling her body once more into a comfortable position, Hamli sent her thoughts questing inward, seeking the entryway the Forest Spirit had opened to her.
