"Damn rich-kid, transient brats!" Annie Keeley swore, remembering how their voices had taunted her as she ducked into the dimness of Trace's Three Satellites Lounge. "Space Station Annie! Space Station Annie!" God, how she hated that epithet! She would never forgive Bram Tyler for writing that damn song. Annie was certain he'd done it out of spite, to punish her for the breakup of their spectacularly unsuccessful affair the previous year. She'd been on her way out even then, and he was an eager, young up-and-comer. At first he'd been wonderful--seeming sympathetic and supportive. They'd shared some fabulous duets back then, on and off stage. But as her popularity waned and his began to grow, he became short-tempered and distant, criticizing everything she did or said. When Annie finally figured out that Bram's career was what their relationship was really about, she dumped him. God, he'd been furious when she told him to get out! She almost smiled at the memory of his perfect, always-so-in-control expression contorted in childish rage. But he'd gotten even, and in spades. Without meaning to, Annie found herself humming the first verse of his bitter prophetic ballad: "Annie sits by herself in a bar, with no friends. She thinks of her past and dreams, now and then. Once she had beauty, but you can see in her eyes That life has grown bitter, love holds no surprise." The performer in her had to appreciate the song's sweet, poignant melody, even though she resented the accuracy of the caricature he'd drawn. But she hadn't been like that till after he'd written Space Station Annie.
