eBook Description: Returning from war to a London he doesn't recognize anymore, Sebastian takes on the life of a hermit, living a life of deprivation in a monk's cell. His only contact with the outside world is the man who brings him supplies. Until Sebastian meets Shae, who turns his whole life around. Shae brings dreams and visions, leaving Sebastian wondering what's real, and what's fantasy. Shae encourages Sebastian to leave his old life, and all of his pain behind. Will giving in to the will of the ethereal Shae make Sebastian happy once more?

From a distance the island seemed calm and almost stoic in contrast to the constant tossing turmoil of the highlands in later winter. The choppy gray sea and boiling cloudy sky seemed not to even touch its steep, heather-stubbled sides. The lighthouse keeper pushed out his small boat and Sebastian waded out with him, steadying the boat as the both clambered inside. He felt eager, so close to escape--but also afraid. "We'll get you out there 'n no time." "Should I, um," Sebastian gestured weakly at the oars the old man already had in hand. "Bin doing this all my life, boy. An' you were an infantry man I hear, over in Afr-eeka. Ought to know better 'n to go around volunteering for things by now." Sebastian grimaced; there was more than enough truth in that. The old man--he'd mumbled his name but between a thick Scots accent and toothless lips, Sebastian had not caught it--certainly seemed unbothered by the effort of pulling through the small, wind-driven waves. Afr-eeka, indeed. He'd seen out the first year of this new twentieth century on the veldt, worn down by the sun and hostile eyes of Boer prisoners of war. The captured men were shipped off to other colonies--the women and children cooped up in makeshift camps after their farms were burned to the ground. He'd been almost relieved to be discharged when his health had not stood up to the strain. But he'd not found a home to return to in the London slums with his mum passed on and his dad always dead drunk beyond reason. He found no place on earth that felt like home, and no company that suited him upon it. "People say they hear music from Bride Island sometimes when the wind is right," the old man mused. Sebastian responded sharply. "I thought the place was deserted. I was assured...." "Oh, it is. It's not people that people say are making it." "People say a lot of foolish things." Sebastian paused, disliking the tone in his own voice.... "I don't mean to be rude, sir. I'm not good company of late." The old man just chuckled. "You'll know better about it than anyone, soon enough."
