The top of the keep, sharp as a dragon's fang and towering high over the island, afforded a sweeping view. The dense belt of enemy vessels massed on the horizon had begun to move. It arced and crept toward them, and, though some ships were faster than others, nowhere was there a break in their formation. The countless throng of humans devoured sea and sky, and the winged legions of the Castle of All the Ancients reached almost to the very sun. The thane saw Rakoth slant swift through the azure in his fiery cloak. His detachments still held their position.
The Generation's forces were near enough now for the observers to make out the details of the ships' rigging. The vessels resembled those that had mounted the unsuccessful attack on Hedinseigh some days previously--tall they were, steep-sided and many-masted, with rosy sails. Filling the gaps between them moved long yellow galleys towed by huge sea-beasts, whale-like but with webbed flippers, enormous tusks protruding from their mouths, and sharp, high, bony fins. Through the air floated astonishing constructions with immense rhythmically beating canvas wings, some harnessed to giant eagles. Even higher soared small dragons, winged wolves and other beings assembled in haste by their overlords to die in a bloody battle whose purpose was unknown to the vast majority of the warriors that marched under the banners of the Castle of All the Ancients.
Fear, an icy serpent, slithered into Hagen's heart. Never before had he faced such a force. How many could Rakoth have brought? And could his servants stand against the combined might of an untold multitude of worlds?
