eBook Description: Oh, those bad boys! Kurt Rainer left his hometown with a bad reputation and bitterness in his heart. After twelve years he's back--and involved in a high profile murder of a movie star. Maggie's head tells her to settle for the sophisticated doctor who wants to take their relationship to the next step. Her heart tells her that she wants Kurt back in her life. Maggie longs for a stable family and a loving father for her child and has plans for herself and her twelve-year-old son that certainly do not have room for a former lover who abandoned her, leaving her pregnant and vulnerable just when she needed him most. When Kurt turns up wounded on her doorstep, she faces hard choices. He never was a suitable father for a boy, and now he's hiding out from a police investigation.

As she dropped her bag on the hall table, a scraping noise came from the back of the house. She froze, listening, her heart beating fast. She felt behind her for the doorknob and took a firm grasp on it, ready to twist it open and run. Her car keys were still in her hand, and she fitted the biggest between her fingers as she had been taught at her self-defense classes. Her mouth was suddenly dry. As if at a signal, a man appeared at the end of the hallway. The sun was low in the sky, sending beams into the front windows and casting dark shadows so she could not see his face. She squinted at the stranger, a clutch of fear tightening her stomach. No one she knew would come into her house while she was out. Her feet felt rooted to the spot, and she willed the muscles in her legs to run. She knew she should get out; but something held her, some intuition, some dreadful knowledge. Still he said nothing, just moved a step closer. His face suddenly sprang into focus. She gasped and put out a hand to steady herself against the wall. Her heartbeat changed to a rapid thud in her ears. She felt hot and then cold. "Kurt?" Her voice strangled in her throat, the question no more than a whisper. Kurt Rainer took another step closer. "Hello, Maggie." "What are you doing here?"
