The wind blew crisply through Kurlin's long dark hair and ruffled the thick cloak he wore as he stood on the main deck of the trade ship, Sovlan's Fortune, surveying the dock. He could hardly believe that this was the fabled Isle of Kantu, home of the vanished race of Carthia. The dock was well-kept and the buildings neat and ordered, but it seemed like any other island port he'd seen in his years of travel. The powerfully built young trader had traveled halfway 'round the world, facing many hazards in his search, believing that his fortune would be assured if he could but secure a supply of potions and charms from the legendary wizards of Kantu. Many had scoffed at his "fool's quest", saying that the Carthic Mages existed only in legend; but there had been many things that rang true in the old tales that his father had told him. So many of the clues had proved accurate that he had to believe the scoffers were wrong. When Sovlan's Fortune miraculously fell into his hands, the legacy of a scarce-known uncle, he'd begged funds from his father to finance an expedition, and set sail.
