She opened her mouth to tell him then decided against it. Turning the focus to him was a safer road. "So, you're not married? I'm surprised. It was something you wanted so badly--a wife and kids. A family."
I wanted those things with you, Maggie, not just anybody."
His words were anguish to her soul. Until this very moment, she hadn't realized how much she wanted to turn back time, to go back to that place where she was sure of her family, sure of his love for her. Yet, he seemed so intense and certain, showing the conviction he'd always had. It was one of the qualities she had loved about him, his strength of will and character. Now it was different, though. In his youth, impetuousness and indignance spurred his vehemence, but his earnestness now seemed more tranquil and compassed.
"Eighteen years is a long time. I figured you would have found someone else, that's all."
He leaned across the table and stared directly into her eyes. "Did you find someone else?"
She lowered her gaze and focused on the leftover food on her plate. No, she hadn't found anyone else--not anyone like Cord. Sure, there'd been a string of men come and go as she'd tried to sort things out in her head; tried to find happiness, a life; tried to mend her brokenness. None of them worked. None of them could fill the void.
"No," she whispered. "I never found anyone else."
"Then why do I get the impression you're still running scared?"
