The time of the Sun god had come to the desert village, straddled atop the magnificent mesa. Everyone enjoyed the unrelenting heat as the last frigid frost faded away. It was in the midst of this endless string of hot days that Leela took up her water basket and climbed down to the Koma River to gather water. She made her way down from the mesa to the valley's dusty floor with steady but purposeful steps. The trip seemed longer than usual as the Sun god poured wave after wave of blistering heat onto her shoulders.

She placed a woven hat onto her head to protect herself and deflect the Sun god's power. There were others who made the trek to the Koma--all were women, for males did not draw their own water. Men were needed for other things that required their time and strength--war, labor, and sex.

As Leela reached the valley's hard, arid floor, her steps quickened and her breathing increased. Already anticipation swept through her body, coiling, growing tighter and damper from her desire--Kunal's face, conjured with only the thought of his name, appeared before her like a mirage. Her stomach knotted up in expectation of seeing his face. A rope ready to snap she stretched harder, walked faster.

Yes, she had to tell him although she dreaded it. Leela pushed on.

Her sense of urgency grew. She had to see Kunal--her legs failed to carry her fast enough to their sanctuary, the deserted cave a little way down river. The fact she had to hide her love burned her stomach. No one should have to conceal something as beautiful and pure as her love for Kunal.

As she crossed from the blistering sun at last into the cool shade of the cave, Leela slowed down. Gloom hid Kunal from passersby. She wasn't really going for water--her father had servants who did that for him.

She was going for Kunal. As soon as she saw him Leela could hardly speak, throwing her arms around him she relished his salty scent. He scooped her up into his embrace planting wet joyful kisses on her face. Gasping in delight, her yearning rising to the forefront, she grabbed Kunal's hair loosening his braid and snatching it by the fistfuls. She loved feeling its silkiness in her hands.

And yet it was never to happen again.

As this sour thought zipped through her, Leela lay her face against his neck and sighed. Trembling, she huddled close to him as if he was water and she a cactus.

"Stop it, Kunal," she said burrowing her face against him, hoping to dissolve into him.

Kunal reluctantly put her on the ground. With his face reflecting his confusion he asked. "What is it?"

She took a few steadying breaths but still her arms trembled. Her Kunal, her poor, poor Kunal. Crossing her arms she pulled back from him.

"Last evening my father, he, he..." she faltered, how could she tell him? Ruin the smoothness of his face with such horrible news. How could she? She touched his face; her eyes locking with his. She owed him the truth.

Concerned Kunal stroked her folded arm, his fingers brushing her flesh. "Speak, Leela. What is it that troubles you so?"

"My father has--has ordered me to wed!" she stuttered it out in a rush of words to displace the bitterness in her mouth. "To a man from some savage tribe!"
