Anaira ducked her head under the mossy, creeping tree roots that reached out to snag her robes-the underground tunnel was infested with gnarled roots of all sizes and she wished she had brought an axe or at least a sword to clear the path. She had expected the path to descend into the deep belly of the world, but it did not. It just wound this way and that-dark, moist, and cold. Lifting the torch as high as she dared with the low ceiling, she surveyed the fork in the path. There had been no mention of a forked path when the Elders sent her on this mission-which path should she choose?

Slowly, she lowered herself to the damp ground and closed her eyes. Her mind raced back to Isgor to seek counsel from the Supreme Sorceress. The old woman would hear her-she always did. Anaira called for the Sorceress with her mind's voice.

"Mother?" she called, addressing the old woman respectfully-though she was not her mother, she was, in a sense, the mother of Isgor. For it had been by the old one's powers that the world of Isgor had been veiled from the mortal world and it was she who had invited the Spirits of the Realm to take refuge there. Anaira didn't know how old the Supreme Sorceress was. Some had told her she was three or four centuries old. The old one seemed Human, but Anaira couldn't be sure.

In the earlier days of the world, there had been much inter-racial mixing and some races did not remain pure. Whatever race she was, the old one wouldn't live much longer. Even with powerful magicks and potions, she was growing weaker and finding it difficult to keep Death at bay. Sooner or later she would have to release her spirit from her body-until then she trained Anaira in the old ways and the old magicks and told her of the coming prophecies that would change the world.

Anaira sought the old one for guidance. "Which path, Mother?" she asked.

"Take the one that is darkest," the old one murmured into her mind's ear. Anaira could almost feel the Sorceress' moist breath upon her ear as she spoke.
