eBook Description: Aaron Edgeway lives in a ramshackle house in a provincial English town with his sick and abusive father. When he meets Victor, their romance quickly becomes an escape from the dreary prospects of his life. An escape that, unbeknownst to Victor, Aaron will do almost anything to protect. Aaron has secrets: a scandalous videotape unwittingly recorded at a drug dealer's party, and the unwanted affections of Alex Clay, his unruly best friend. Alex tries to free Aaron from blackmail and harassment, building a pressure-cooker atmosphere of desire and deceit. Trapped by a twist of fate, Aaron goes to lengths he never dreamed possible in order to preserve his romance with Victor. Unrequited details a descent into heartbreak and loss, and questions the dangers of love, and the things we do in order to heal ourselves. It is a bittersweet fairytale, an erotic and cautionary fable about revenge for anyone who has suffered from a broken heart.

"Mr. Bennett's first novel is at first glance a surprisingly thickly layered canvas. Yet a closer look reveals finely etched detail which illuminates the work and will leave the reader eagerly looking forward to his next book. An auspicious start to a promising writing career."--Dorien Grey, Lambda Award-nominated author of the Dick Hardesty mystery series.
"There is much to enjoy in this novel. The characters feel like people you have met or maybe glimpsed in the shadows--faces in the background of 'a life more ordinary' dragged into the spotlight and to the harsh light of day--where visions of happy ever after crumble into 'walls of ash'. There is raw energy in the writing that captures the grief of unrequited love. To me one of the most telling passages occurs early on. Aaron seeks solace in the glossy self-help pages of a magazine and is defeated by a 'get over it' solution of 'feng-shui for the heartbroken' He comments wearily, 'You can't move a sofa around to forget that, once upon a time, you were loved.' Who can blame him for seeking a more definite resolution? Lyrical, romantic and seductive, this is a tale that beguiles the senses. James Bennett takes the age-old theme of unrequited love and weaves a modern parable of love and loss, mystery and revenge. Unrequited is a stylish trip through ecstasy and nightmare that leaves the reader wide-eyed and staring at the dark."--Sarah Saltonstall, Twisted Tongue Magazine

From the crumbling wall, a few yards behind me, Carlos glared down to where I slumped in the muck. I noticed blotches of blood staining the lapels of his bomber jacket in the bleached gloom. He clenched his fists in aggravation. When our eyes met, his lips curled into a snarl. Sylvester yelled from the other side of the hedgerow, but distance muffled his words. Blearily, I staggered to my feet, the park swaying around me. There came a soft thump as Carlos jumped from the wall and began making his way down the slope. Insanely, I shouted for Alex, a stretch of untouched snow swallowing my cry. Carlos paused ten feet away, a vengeful golem standing in the slushy groove caused by my fall. "He can't hear you," he snarled. "Nobody can hear you ... and no one is coming to help you." He strode over the mushy ground, eager to close the distance between us. I didn't wait to give him the opportunity. On trembling legs, I abandoned the strewn cargo of the shopping bags and jogged toward the motionless arc of the river. Carlos gave chase. I came to a breathless halt at the river's edge, holding up a bleeding palm to the advancing Spaniard. To my surprise, he paused, regarding me warily. "This is stupid," he panted, his breath sending smoke signals into the gloom. "Give it up, and I may just let you live."
