eBook Description: Chillers for Thriller fans! A Special Edition of The Audio Archive spotlighting both the "Inner Sanctum Mysteries" program and Boris Karloff starring in "The Tell Tale Heart". Inner Sanctum Mysteries featured one of the most memorable and atmospheric openings in radio history: an organist hit a dissonant chord, a doorknob turned and the famous "creaking door" slowly began to open. Inner Sanctum Mysteries debuted over NBC's Blue Network in 1941 and featured stories of mystery, terror and suspense. Boris Karloff, one of the greatest and best loved icons of the horror genre, worked in films playing bit parts for over ten years before being cast as, what is probably his best remembered role, the monster in "Frankenstein" in 1931. His last movie performance was in Peter Bogdanovich's "Targets" in 1968. In the 37 years between the two films he became firmly established as a Horror icon with films like "The Mummy", "The Old Dark House" and "The Walking Dead" and won new legions of fans in the 1960's with his popular television anthology series "Thriller". But, in the Golden Age of Radio Boris Karloff appeared on dozens of programs, where he would often surprise the audience with his excellent singing voice or by appearing in comedy sketches lampooning his own sinister on-screen persona. As a bonus, this special Audio Archive includes one such sketch from the "Dorothy Lamour Show" from 1948. You may never have heard Karloff quite like this before! However, his portrayal of Simon in the featured performance from "The Inner Sanctum Mysteries" program is Klassic Kreepy Karloff, in this Robert Newman adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell Tale Heart". A musician named Simon spends 6 months in a hospital being treated for his sudden devastating deafness; an affliction that he says is worse than being dead... "it's like being dead, and knowing that you are dead!". But, his hospital treatment has succeeded beyond all expectations and he can now hear again, better than ever... better than anyone else on earth. Elated at his recovery Simon leaves the hospital, and meets up with Oliver, another patient (played by veteran actor Everett Sloan), with whom Simon sets out to start life anew in a little millhouse just outside of town. But, their happy domesticity is short-lived and before the first night is out there will be sinister and deadly doings inside the old millhouse. A unique adaptation of this venerable Poe classic and an excellent example of suspense and horror from one of the gems of the Golden Age of Radio, "Inner Sanctum Mysteries". This Audio Archive episode is preceded by a brief introduction with some background on Inner Sanctum, biographical information about Karloff, as well as the voice of Forrest J Ackerman (editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland) describing a day he spent on a film set with his friend Boris. Hosted by OTR fan and afficionado Bill Mills. A presentation of REB Audio Books and Renaissance eBooks Inc. (program time: 41:57)
