The Ripple EffectThere are only so many omens and portents you can shrug off before the universe slaps you in the face with an unmistakable Sign of Things to Come. A blood-red sky in the morning, the milk boiling over, a lone silver rose blazing in the depths of winter, seven ravens across a blushing moon, even Scarlet throwing a hissy fit over a broken fingernail: pretty much business as usual. But when Kelly looks up from a sink of suds and hand-blown glasses, he finally has to admit that this is a red-letter day. Looking back through the kitchen window are unicorns. Kelly shuts his eyes and counts to five ver-ry slo-ow-ly before cracking his lids. "Damn." Being right the first time is so wrong. Then every single light globe shatters and the dark rushes in on wingéd feet. Unicorns! Now this is unique. Unicorns are solitary creatures, demanding sizeable territory at odds with their diminutive size, and while they roam at will and menace within Hawking Wood, they never forsake sylvan shelter. So panic is a realistic option. Although ... they're just standing there, utterly still, eyes as red as laser beams focusing through the window Kelly sets the Venetian goblet on the draining board with exquisite care and dries his hands on the linen tea towel draping his shoulder. The fizz of evaporating bubbles plays counterpart to the pounding of his blood, drowning out Tears For Fears singing I never find out until I'm head over heels ... A ray of red light skims over the CD player and the song cuts out with a nasty crackle. Kelly raises two fingers and waves slightly, before diving for the floor.
