On her good days she could get up and cook her meals, draw the broom across the hard-packed earthen floor, even sit on the doorstep and watch the crows drifting across the sky. She found that she could portion out her time and strength: half an hour to cut up a chicken and some vegetables and put them in the pot; an hour to rest while it simmered over the fire. Sometimes she could even walk a furlong's distance to a neighbor's house, sit for an hour swapping battle yarns with the stories of these strange quiet people who had lived in the same place all their lives, lives as rich and complex as her own.
