A front of diffuse night-ideas drifted in from the city. Weightier intricacies had wafted out on the previous morning, wandering low enough to bump into village houses; but these dying notions were too ghostly to be a problem, even if they had come in lower. I leaned against a tree, watching Bruno's bearlike shape checking the teams in the clearing. The nets were all set for the morning catch, but Bruno always liked to take extra care. "Keep your eyes open!" he shouted, then turned to where he knew I would be. "Felix! Stop dreaming and get to your place!" I imagined the city's great dome of force distorting the sunrise. I saw the dreamers in repose. No end of ecstasy for them. no end of energy with which to create, no need even to know that others had to trap and live on their emissions. No matter, Bruno would say, we have our living from what pleases them, for as long as the sun shines. The balance is happiness. I wondered at how all this had come about. Had it ever been otherwise?
