eBook Description: Our January/February issue is timed for the holidays, so we've gift-wrapped a festive assortment in this double issue of stories that span the globe and the centuries: A whodunit from 13th century England, "The Voice at the Barbican Gate" by Eric Rutter, and a sensitive case for Lady Aoi from ancient Japan in "The Gingko Leaf" by Ann Woodward are few of the historicals we have in this issue. Sense of place in our current times is captured in an amateur's sleuth's investigation of a bathroom attendant's death in a Manhattan hotel in G. Miki Hayden's "A Killing in Midtown" and in a P.I.'s probe of a murder at a Chicago theater in Steve Lindley's "Death Takes Center Stage." Two perceptive Florida retirees are onto a deadly fraud scheme unfolding in their condo complex in Janice Law's "Golden Years." In Elaine Menge's "Best of Breed" (excerpted here) a teen's trust in his dog clients-and the dogs' trust in him-helps to thwart a killer. John H. Dircks's carefully plotted, engaging procedurals showcase the work of Detective Cyrus Auburn, and in "Numskulduggery" he shows how the small details reveal a the big picture; Loren D. Estleman shows how even the small things can foul plans when a hit man gets chatty at a roadside diner in the darkly humorous "How's My Driving."And in keeping with the season we have two stories with a Christmas theme: S.W. Hubbard's "Chainsaw Nativity" (excerpted here) set in a small town in Upstate New York, and R.T. Lawton's "Click Click Click," in which two Santas are not better than one. In addition we have a challenging mystery-themed acrostic puzzle, book reviews by Robert C. Hahn, and an interview with "novelization king" Max Allan Collins in Steve Hockensmith's Reel Crime column.
