There's Always Time For Romance"So ... Nicole. What are you doing for the holidays?" Duane Randal casually leaned up against the doorframe to Nicole Vericovie's office. His suit was well pressed, immaculate as usual. Not a single hair was out of place upon his sandy brown head. He smiled, flashing a mouth full of perfectly white teeth. Nicole was sitting at her computer finishing the last of the days work, glanced up. She didn't have much left to do, and then she could go home to spend Christmas with her dog, Cain, and her cat, Felix. She wished her life wasn't so pathetic. She wished she could tell him that she was off to the mountains to spend Christmas with her boyfriend ... who didn't exist. She frowned, twirling a piece of auburn hair between her fingers. "As it happens, Duane, I am spending Christmas at home this year." He pushed himself up from the doorframe and moved further into the office. They had worked together for well over six years now, and both were rather comfortable with each other. "By yourself?" he asked, as he plopped down in one of the large leather armchairs. She sighed softly, trying not to look so forlorn. Why would he assume she would be by herself? She could have a boyfriend tucked away somewhere! "What makes you think I will be by myself?" She shot him a bit of a glare, then looked back to the computer screen, as if there was something there of great importance. "I was just assuming ... that's all. With as much as you work, I didn't know if you had a boyfriend. I just don't see where you would find the time is all." He knew how he sounded, arrogant and probably slightly insulting. Nicole sat back in her chair and looked up at him. Her eyes shot daggers at him, "I don't have time for romance." She stood up and walked over to the printer, waiting for the last of her work to come sliding out. "Well ... you must have family. Why not spend Christmas with them?" He wasn't sure if he wanted to touch on that too much. Nicole was not the type to talk about her family. She had no photos in her office of family members, or children. Just two pictures one of a rather fierce looking German Shepard, and the other of a large, obese, black cat. It was obvious now that she was getting slightly irritated with Duane's questions, why was he asking them in the first place? As much as she wanted to tell him to get the hell out of her office ... she simply couldn't. He had been her only secret crush for years. "My family ... I don't really have much of a family Duane, I would rather drop that subject." She spoke softly and glanced over at him, as she collected the papers that were spewing out of the printer. Duane winced slightly. He had gone a little too far, maybe? He was simply trying to make small talk. He stood up and brushed the wrinkles out of his pants. His dark brown eyes sweeping over her frame, She was tall, athletically built. She had curves in all the right places. Every now and then she would wear a blouse that gave the slightest hint of cleavage. Those were the hard days. He couldn't help but look. "I didn't mean to offend you Nicole. I was wondering if you were interested in coming up north with some friends and I. We rented a few cabins. One of the guys got sick, and we have room for one more. If you're interested?" He raised an eyebrow, watching her. Nicole perked up at the invitation. It was a rather intriguing one. She wasn't going to be doing anything this year. No parties, no family, and no man to sit in front of the fire with. "When are you headed up?" Duane smiled, knowing he had her interest now. "I am headed up tonight. The others will get there tomorrow night, after they spend Christmas morning with their families. I can give you a ride if you like. That way we don't have to deal with directions. He shoved his hands into his pockets, a strand of his hair falling in front of his eyes as he looked at her.
