Every detail was perfect from the upright ears to the feathering of the ruff, except for the eyes, she noted with a frown. There was only a slightly curved surface beneath the lids; the artisan had failed to cut the stylized hollows which would give the impression of eyes. Odd that she had never noticed this before. Sitting down at her worktable she examined the cat's face more closely in the soft flicker of the candle--she could hardly afford to waste lamp oil now, unless she was working. The longer she looked, the more she felt the wrongness of the cat's face. Suddenly dipping her finger in the half-dried indigo dye she used to paint her charm beads, Shallisa dabbed a little in the center of each eye, then playfully marked the insides of each ear and the tip of the nose, finally tracing the line of the lips with the last of the thick blue paste. "There, my dear," she laughed, "now you have eyes to see, ears to hear, a nose to smell and a mouth to speak!" The transformation was amazing. "What a handsome fellow you are," she said with a smile; only a male would have such a ruff. In the soft glow of the candle it seemed that the lapis cat smiled back. She blew out the flame and settled onto her pallet.
