Cat Party"Whatever you do, don't answer the door tonight," Kelly warns urgently. "You mean you're expecting visitors who actually knock?" Josh shrugs until Kelly loosens the fist bunching Josh's shirtfront. Kelly sinks onto the stool, hooks his ankles round the legs. "Maybe that was too melodramatic. But the point still stands. Don't answer anything. In fact, it would probably be safest to go find a convenient cupboard and lock yourself in it right now." "I'm starting to worry." Josh looks closer. "Are you paling out on me?" "No! I just..." Both Kelly's fists are in his hair, yanking hard enough to slant his eyes. "It just saves time later. Saves blood loss, blood shed..." Josh grabs Kelly's wrists, grinds his thumbs into the pressure points until Kelly's grip loosens and he can pull the seneschal's hands down. "Deep breath. With me now ... in, hold, exhale, explain." "Scarlet's girlfriends are coming by. And the damn woman gives me ten minutes notice." "That's it? That's what all the babbling and mortal terror is about? A hen party? Not the slavering zombie horde marching up the driveway or the return of disco?" "Hey! They were all there for disco so don't knock it in their presence." "No dissing the disco, got it." Josh nods agreeably, judging it safe to let go as Kelly's eyes aren't so wide and white anymore. He reclaims his knife and drags the blue bowl of strawberries closer, so he can whisk the stem from the berry and drop the fruit into the shallow dish of vanilla-lime marinade. "You chase things in basements, live with the immortal-unless-killed, your best buddy is a salamander and your nephew is an incubus, but the prospect of a girl's night in scares you." Josh bites into a strawberry. "Are they really that bad?" "Maybe not individually." Kelly gulps. "But here's a hint. Last time they ran out of snacks and nominated me for the burger run. Do you have any idea what it's like to order a Beach Boy, a Naughty Boy, two Cheeky Boys, a Cow Boy and a Kung Fu Boy?"
