What the Storm Dragged In

Sometimes a dark and stormy night is just dark and stormy, nothing mystical about it. And as any sensible monster will be safe under the bed, rather than out dodging intermittent lightning bolts, Scarlet takes the night off.

But that leaves her roaming the mansion with not much to do expect ponder the mystery of Josh and she is so very sick of that. Her wanderings eventually carry her to her shoe cupboard. The neat pairs and in their transparent boxes always soothes, filling her with pride and the light bubbling floating sense of joy.

Except there is something off ... Scarlet leans in the doorway, wriggling her toes in her amethyst harem slippers--the genuine article, of course--as her eyes stray along the rows.

"Alphabetical by colour!"

Why hasn't she thought of that before? It really is the only way to catalogue her footwear correctly.

When Kelly comes sneaking along an hour later to scare her out of her wits, Scarlet is sitting tailor-fashion in her walk-in wardrobe, boxes in disarray, holding a pair of aqua satin pumps to the light.

"Have I seen those before?"

Scarlet whips them behind her back. "Of course."

Kelly raises an eyebrow and selects a length of apple wood to feed into the fireplace.

"At least you would if you ever bothered to pay attention," Scarlet defends. She cautiously brings the shoes back front and centre, keeping them close to her ribs just in case Kelly tries to snatch them away with an Aha! and a reproving finger-waggle.

When he only hums sceptically, Scarlet eases them into their box and nudges the box behind a stack of others. Her elbow bumps the next stack and the top box falls. She catches the gold goddess sandals she definitely doesn't qualify for before they hit the floor.
