Somewhere back in my not-very-distant past some poor benighted ancestor lived his entire miserable life in the same hovel where he was born. In all the years of wresting a living from the soil he saw few, if any changes in his environment or the society around him. Knowledge was his village's memories and the occasional word of mouth from some visiting stranger.
My great-grandfather was born in a sod-hut, cut fresh from the prairie. As a young boy he rode down the muddy roads in a mule-drawn wagon and went to his grave in a horse drawn carriage on a paved street. He was proud that the town produced a weekly paper, even if he couldn't read it.
