Colliding with MarsA brush of a familiar presence brings Kelly out of his trance. His lashes drift up. Muscles remember their purpose and his head rises. "Hello, Beth. I'd say it's nice to see you but I'd be lying and I seem to remember you had a thing about that." "Kelly." Beth smiles. "Always something to say." Beth steps into the room, past the translucent veils of netting that keep the dust and sand at bay, and right into the corona of hot lights beaming down from the rig on the ceiling, lights that swivel to mercilessly illuminate the nooks and crannies of the human form and psyche. "Hate those awkward pauses," Kelly agrees. He meets her smile with one of his own, a smile spiking with dark irreverence that grows as they watch each other. The hem of Beth's white silk robe teases her ankles and the feathery ends of her brown sugar hair slides along her jaw as she strolls a circle round him. Widdershins. She halts in front of him and nestles her chin in the cup of her palm, index finger slanting over her lips. "You know, the reality of this situation exceeds all my expectations." "Been planning this long?" "You'd be surprised." "No. I don't think so." Kelly studies the wires binding his hands to the lattices. "Something this artistically elaborate isn't exactly a spur of the moment thing." "It just came to me," Beth claims. She snaps her fingers for emphasis. "One of those epiphany things."
