4.5 Hearts Out of 5! "I enjoyed this paranormal story by Ms. McGillivray because she successfully entwined the paranormal side of the story to a mysterious side. She had you wondering what was going on with poor Rae and Alex and at the same time lured you into turning the pages to find out more of what was happening to everyone. She had me guessing right up to the end how all these puzzle pieces were going to fit together. This was a fun read for me because I felt as if I was another character in the story. If you want a paranormal story with mysterious happenings sprinkled throughout, this is definitely a story you don't want to pass up."--Diana Coyle, Night Owl Romance Reviews "Neither Rae nor Alex has any idea why they would be summoned to attend the reading of a will of a man they never heard of, but the two strangers find themselves required to first spend a weekend in his home, and then, in order to receive a hefty bequest, they are to live in it for two years and during that time, attempt to lay to rest two troubled souls haunting it. Seeing the potential uses for the money, both want to do good with it, they agree and find both their residence and the company more than agreeable, for the most part. However, their quest is one that often proves frustrating. The ghosts need their help, but Alex and Rae are stumped until they find a breakthrough that will have profound implications for their own lives. This was both a fun read and a moving one. Without being sappy, it was sweet. The author's use of words paints vivid images in your mind and makes the entire situation seem like something that could happen."--Amanda Kilgore, independent reviewer

Chapter 1

Raechel Martin felt like the wind was boring icicles into her face and threatening to blow her into oblivion as she walked home on the snow-covered sidewalk. The wind whipped and roared around the streets of the windy city of Chicago, slapping her long, fiery red hair in her face until she held it back with one hand while shielding herself from it with the other. She was grateful for the little alcove that protected her from the weather as she unlocked the door to her apartment and went in. Pulling off her gloves, she picked up the mail from the floor where it had fallen through the slot, and dropped it on the kitchen counter. Removing her coat, scarf and boots, she made a cup of herbal tea and savored the hot liquid warming her insides. It was dreadfully cold and windy outside, and walking the three blocks from her job to home was brutal. It had been a long, tiring and emotionally distressing day. All Raechel wanted to do was eat dinner and climb into bed, snuggle under the heavy patchwork quilt her mother made for her, and watch television until she fell asleep.

As a social worker for the City of Chicago, a department constantly understaffed and under funded, Raechel put in long hours. Some days she was able to reunite children with their families, which always left a glow on her face and warmth in her heart, but today she had to take a baby away from its mother, who was using drugs and neglecting the child. She hurt for the child, so in need of love and care, and mourned for the mother, a mere child herself. Raechel shuffled through her mail until she saw an official looking envelope from the office of Attorney James Wharton. Sipping her tea, she pulled out the letter.

Dear Ms. Martin,

This is to inform you that Mr. Jonathan Sheffield has passed away. The reading of his will is to take place on January tenth. Your presence at the reading is required. Please contact me for further instructions.

Sincerely,

James Wharton

Enclosed with the letter was a business card from the attorney and an obituary notice clipped from the Waukegan newspaper saying that Jonathan Sheffield died in his sleep at the age of ninety-five after a long illness. His body was cremated.

Why she was receiving this notice and letter, she couldn't fathom. Raechel had no idea who Jonathan Sheffield was or why she should be present at the reading of his will. She looked at the time glowing red on the coffeepot. It was after seven in the evening. Should she call Mr. Wharton tonight to tell him he'd made a mistake, or wait until morning? She popped a frozen dinner in the microwave and debated her choice for less than a minute before picking up the phone and dialing the number.

"Mr. Wharton, this is Raechel Martin. I received a letter from you concerning a Mr. Jonathan Sheffield."

"Yes, Ms. Martin. I'm so happy to hear from you. I've made arrangements for you to stay in Sheffield Manor the weekend of the will reading."

"You don't understand, Mr. Wharton. You have the wrong person. I don't know this man, nor have I ever heard of him. Why would he want me present at the reading of his will?"

"Ms. Martin, I have my instructions. It would be in your best interest to attend." Mr. Wharton coughed quietly and said, "May I count on you?"

"Well, I suppose so, but I really don't understand."

"That's fine then. The reading takes place on Sunday, but I've been instructed to request your appearance on Friday. Would you like me to send a car for you?"

"That won't be necessary. I have my own."

Raechel jotted down the directions to Sheffield Manor, located on Lake Michigan between Zion and Waukegan, Illinois while holding the phone receiver with her chin. Taking the receiver in her hand, she said goodbye to Mr. Wharton after he wished her a safe drive to Sheffield Manor.

Raechel must have read and reread that letter ten times the following day. Try as she might, she couldn't come up with one single reason why she should be invited to attend the reading of Mr. Sheffield's will. On Thursday evening she called her mother. "Mom, hi, it's me, Rae."

"Hi, yourself. How are you, Darling?"

"Well, Mom, right now I'm puzzled. Have you ever heard of a man named Jonathon Sheffield?"

"Not that I can recall, why?"

"Apparently Mr. Sheffield died recently. Yesterday I got a letter from his attorney, James Wharton, requesting my presence at the reading of his will. Any idea why I would be included?"

"I'm sorry, Dear. I've never heard of the man, but you never know, you may have helped someone in his family though your work. Why don't you just go to the reading and see what comes of it?"

"I will, but I have to spend the weekend near Zion, and get this, he didn't live in a house, he lived in Sheffield Manor. What do you think of that?"

"Fascinating. Sounds like you're in for an adventure. Do you want me to come with you?"

"No, Mom, I'll be fine, but I want to give you the address and the name and phone number for the attorney."

"Oh good, thanks, Rae. Sorry the name just doesn't ring a bell with me. Maybe he left you a pile of money." Tricia Martin laughed as she took down the information.

"I can't imagine that, Mom, but I'll call you when I arrive."

"I'll miss you at dinner tomorrow night."

"Me too. We live so close and I usually only get to see you on the weekends. We'll make up for it next week. I'll take you out to dinner."

"Sounds wonderful. I'll look forward to it. You be careful driving."

After promising she would, Raechel hung up and went about the business of packing for the weekend. She had taken off work Friday. With the temperature at eighteen degrees and a wind chill factor of thirteen below zero and snow in the forecast, she didn't want to be on the road at night, just in case her old Toyota gave her trouble. Maybe she should have accepted a ride, as Mr. Wharton had offered. But this was a strange situation, and even though she had looked up the attorney's credentials and confirmed Mr. Sheffield's death, she wanted her own transportation available. She may not want to stay the entire weekend, or she may want to dismiss the reading of the will completely. Surely this stranger hadn't left her anything, so what did he want with her? A feeling of discomfort told her she was going to need to be very careful.
