"But why, Dad? You threw so much away." He could hear his son's words resonating again and again in his mind. He'd told him that he gained everything. That he merely made a change in order to live again, before he died, one last time. Jeff said, "One, you're not dying, and two, normal people don't rob banks." Reliving this conversation was irritating, but it wouldn't fade from him. "Dad, you could have taken a vacation." "I did," Bill responded. "Where?" "In the Western State Pen. Pretty fucking exotic." He laughed. Jeff had walked to the other side of the room and stared out of Bill's office window. "Don't pretend you're some kind of tough guy. It doesn't get much lower security than where they had you. Some kind of white collar country club." "Hey, I just did my time where they put me. I paid the consequences for my actions." This was the kicker that truly infuriated Jeff. "But you forgot that others paid the consequences as well--your family, your friends, your associates. No one wanted to be associated with the firm because it had 'Bill Lawson' tacked on the front door." "My firm. Hell, I built it and don't forget that. I can do whatever the hell I want to with it. Poor Nebraska farm boy I am. If you want a firm, go build one yourself." "And I did," Jeff said, "because Lawson and Associates was blown all to hell. People lost their incomes, Dad. All of your associates. Me, your son, I suffered, my family suffered. Your grandson suffered because of it." "Oh, don't give me that crap. He's five, he doesn't know what suffering is." "When you've got to give up Cap'n Crunch for generic Cheerios, that is suffering to a five year old." "He'll get over it." By this point, they had started to yell and Jeff soon stormed out.
