The Chosen Mate
Clarissa sat alone in her room, staring at the parchment in her hands. She had been warned this might happen. She just had never really believed it would truly take place. Well, as Father had predicted, the law had been put into effect, and she now had one week left to choose among the men who had petitioned for her upon finding out she was of age. In one hand, Clarissa held the notice. In the other she held the charm they had sent along with it. Bewildered, she read the notice again:
Dear Miss Whitaker;
As you well know, the number of still births to the magical community has been at an all time high over the last several years. Each year, fewer children are admitted into the schools of Magical Education. As much as we wish there were another option, it has become apparent that there is no other choice.
We must address this issue the only way we know how. You will be given one month to choose from the list of eligible wizards. We recommend you choose carefully, as the marriage is legal, binding and unbreakable in our world. In other words, there is no such thing as Divorce.
Although we can offer you no way out of this, we do want you to understand that we are not completely ignorant of your feelings and the unhappiness this is sure to cause you.
In regards to such, we have also enclosed a simple charm you may perform. We urge you to consider using this charm in order to help you in this difficult decision.
Please try to look at this as not an infringement against your rights, but as a way to help your world.

Clarissa sighed and dropped the parchment on the bed beside her. Turning to the list of wizards who had petitioned for her hand, she pursed her lips. This was not what she wanted. But, she did understand that if drastic measures were not used, the Magical world she had come to love would slowly dwindle away and die. Reading through the list, she tried her hardest not to cry.
