eBook Description: Vampire: (n) One who preys on another. (vam'pîr') When said like that, it sounds ominous, dangerous; it could be anyone, anytime ... anywhere. That is not a comfortable idea to people; their neighbor, their co-worker, their friend ... could be a vampire. If you add a supernatural element, such as increased strength, faster speed, and the fact they rose after being slain to feed on the blood of the living ... people are happy not knowing they exist. They give the vampires weaknesses that make them easier to handle, a fear of holy symbols and water, stakes, fire, sunlight and garlic and people will sleep better at night. Once they make that jump, it's simple to call them a myth, a superstition, a story told to scare children. Surely, they reason, in this time of modern technology and science such ancient things cannot survive in this world. Wrong. Vampires are very real.

Prologue Vampire: (n) One who preys on another. (v'am'p'ir') When said like that, it sounds ominous, dangerous. Stated like that it could be anyone, anytime ... anywhere. That is not a comfortable idea to most people; that anyone, their neighbor, their co-worker, their friend ... or their lover, could be a vampire. If you add a supernatural element, such as increased strength, faster speed, and the fact they rose after being slain to feed on the blood of the living ... people are happy not knowing they exist. They give the vampires weaknesses that make them easier to handle, a fear of holy symbols, holy water, stakes, sunlight, fire and garlic and people will sleep better at night. Once they make that jump, it's simple to call them a myth, a superstition, a story told to scare children and some adults in movies. Surely, they reason, in this time of modern technology and science such ancient things cannot survive in this world. Wrong. Vampires are very real. They are creatures of the night who hunt, stalk and kill their human neighbors, who feed on the fear and terror of those they call prey. They are not part of society, they do not have friends, they are cold-blooded, ruthless killers who have no concerns above themselves and what they need. But there are some who keep a low profile, who go unnoticed, and take their food from animals, blood banks and willing humans. They work evening jobs to save themselves from the sun and give themselves money to live in apartments, houses and other places. They are just trying to get by in a world that doesn't want to know they exist and would destroy them if they knew. It is said that time heals all wounds, that people will forget if given long enough. But some say that time causes as many as it heals. To some, eternal life and time is the enemy. Knowing that age, disease or the ravishes of time will not age nor kill you gives some a sense of God-like powers and makes them mad; having only sunlight and fire as the banes of existence can cause even the most stable vampires to turn on each other. Eventually the blood of humans is not enough to sustain their hunger for life ... and death. Eventually ... they all turn on other vampires. That's where we come in.
