eBook Description: On Earth's once decimated surface, the last of an ancient people live--they believe they are the only ones left. Not far from their mountain home another populace had survived the holocaust. Deep within the earth they exist, toiling for their masters in the cavernous underworld called Sanctum. Their only lawful diversion, Mazeplay, a gladiatorial game played on ice. On the surface, Nakella, the tribal priest's son, hungers to escape the confines of his mountain village. Much to his father's alarm he prepares to leave with his followers. Jarret St John, a mazeplayer, is convinced the surface can again support life and that the rulers of Sanctum, the Fulberth, want to keep the masses trapped below. A plan to escape the city is hatched.

"To me!" St John yelled not waiting for the blockers skating furiously for contact with the Department of Order who were approaching at great speed. Three Red blockers were shoulder to shoulder synchronizing their stride perfectly. He glanced behind relieved to find a solid blue front with him and dug in his skates tacking to one side just before the giant blockers hurtled together. A second from impact Red lifted sticks together across their chests aiming to inflict maximum damage. They came together with sickening force; the violence of the collision stunned the spectators into silence. Bodies slid away face down, bones and sticks had snapped. "MY GOD!" Rodericks roared then clutched at his chest, he was so exhilarated he gagged and had to sit down fast. Simultaneously, as if someone had given a signal, the crowd ignited into a howling mass, screaming out for blood. Six players lay motionless on the ice, in amongst broken sticks and pieces of armament. Axell's helmet was split clean in two, blood pouring down his face.
