He is pointing the pistol straight at my head. I don't know or care what the caliber is; I only care that it is pointing at my head. His hands are only shaking slightly; muddy hair covers his eyes.
"Give me the money!" he screams. I should be handing it over, but I am frozen. His free hand makes a fist, and he slams it down on the counter separating us. The rolled up horoscopes spill on the floor. I feel no allegiance to the national chain of convenience stores that own this place. The manager of this store is a bloated little prick, and I don't care what his bottom line looks like. I should be smiling and opening the drawer. I should be happily handing over the $150 or so that lies inside, but a memory has me in its grip, and like a movie that must play out, I am frozen until it is done.
