At precisely eleven in the morning, the bells in the clock tower came to life, sending robust peals and echoes over the pitched roofs of Zermatt. Midway up the green alpine slopes, Jason saw a cow pause and survey the valley, the bell on its neck perhaps ringing a faint counterpoint. "Isn't it beautiful?" Ginger said in a hushed burst of awe. She was looking beyond the buildings and high pastures, to the fang of ice and rock jutting into the blue Swiss sky. Jason had seen the Matterhorn twice before, but the peak was a spectacle that never grew stale. Ginger was standing at the window, naked, bent over with her hands braced on the sill.
