If You Have Trouble DownloadingeReader for iPhone and iPod touch FAQ
You may have no active credit cards in your account. In order to download your purchase, you must have at least one active credit card in your account.
To solve this, simply log in to your ereader.com account. Click on ACCOUNT near the top center of the home page. Scroll down to the area with the ADD CREDIT CARD button. Add any valid credit card. We will make a $1 charge to the card to validate it, but we will never "capture" the transaction so you will not actually lose any money and it will disappear off your account in a few days. This is just so we can validate it.
Be sure to use the very same billing name and card number to unlock your books after getting them onto the iphone/ipod touch. Spelling and middle initials matter in the name. The device will remember the last few unlock codes in a secure way so you will not have to keep entering it over and over for every book, just the first book then after that only when you change your card number.

How to use eReader
See the eReader for iPhone and iPod touch FAQ for a video demonstration of many of the features of the eReader.
To open a book, simply tap on the title of a book to start reading it.
To get back to the bookshelf, tap the Bookshelf button in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.
While reading a book, swipe the screen right to left to flip to the next page and left to right to go backward. Just a very small swipe will do, half an inch or so. If you prefer to tap rather than swipe to turn pages, there is an option to change the page turn gesture.
Tap the screen to show the toolbar at the bottom of the screen (if you are using tap to turn pages then a swipe will display the toolbar). The toolbar contains icons allowing you view the table of contents, bookmarks, notes, find text, find again, lock the screen orientation, start autoscroll, and customize reading settings.
The gear icon on the toolbar brings up the Settings screen. The settings screen allows you to lock the screen orientation (for example if you read laying on your side), select color themes, select tap or swipe page turning gestures, enable or disable the page turning animation, select font size and font style, display or hide the status bar, and select several text formatting options such as margins, line spacing and justification.
Follow a link, show footnotes, or sidebars by firmly pressing on the link for a moment. A brief pause is necessary to distinguish a selection from a tap. To get back to where you came from, bring up the header bar then click on the "back" icon which is to the left of the page selection slide bar. eReader remembers what page you are on between runs for each eBook.
When you first open an eBook it has to be "paginated" in order to present a consistent page by page view of the eBook. You may begin reading even while pagination is in progress. A bar at the bottom of the screen shows pagination progress. Pagination typically takes a minute or so depending on how big the eBook is.
If you try to jump to a section of the eBook that has not yet been paginated you will get a "Waiting for Page" message. If you change font size or style, or if you flip to landscape viewing then the eBook may have to be re-paginated. But each orientation and font size combination is only paginated once, eReader saves pagination information for each eBook.
After pagination is completed, a thin bar at the very bottom of the screen shows how far into the eBook you have read.
eReader can connect to your bookshelf at eReader.com, Fictionwise.com, and other eBook stores. For a current list of stores browse to: http://www.ereader.com/iphone/stores.htm
To add books to your iPhone OS device's bookshelf from a store bookshelf, tap the + button in the lower right-hand corner of the navigation bar. Then choose "eReader/Fictionwise shelf". This will open a screen to allow you to enter your login information which includes your account name and password. Press Go and your information will be verified and then the contents of you on-line bookshelf will be listed for you. Browse the list of books to determine which books you would like to download. An indicator appears next to books in the list that you already have on your device. Tap the book listing to view a detailed description and press the Download button to download the book to your device. It will download to your iPhone OS device in the background, and you'll be notified when it has finished downloading.
Warning: It is not recommended that you attempt to download all the books in your bookshelf all at the same time. Depending on your network connection speed and the book's size, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to minutes for books to download. Some user's bookshelves are quite large and this would only increase the server load on ereader.com and could result in aborted downloads.
In the bookshelf, delete books by tapping the Edit button in the navigation bar at the top of the screen, then use the standard iPhone OS interface controls to delete a book. Tap the Done button to return to viewing the bookshelf.
You can always download your eBooks again in the future by going back to your eReader.com or Fictionwise.com bookshelf.
Unlocking Premium eBooks
Major publishers require that their eBooks be locked for each customer. eReader eBooks are locked using the billing name and credit card number of the primary credit card on your eReader.com or Fictionwise.com account.
When you first open a premium eBook, you will be prompted to enter this information. Please note that you must spell your billing name exactly as you did when you registered it in your account, including middle initials, but upper and lower case do not matter. If you download the ebook directly from Fictionwise.com or eReader.com, your account name will be filled in for you and the last four digits of the unlock code will be displayed as an unlock hint.
NOTE: For security reasons eReader does not actually store your card information in the eBook or on your device, rather it uses a 1-way "hash code" of the information, and it is impossible to recover your information from this "hash code".
You only need to enter the information once per card, eReader remembers the hash codes of the last few card numbers you have entered and automatically tries them when you open a new premium eBook on your iPhone or iPod Touch. This method of locking premium eBooks has big advantages over other systems, for more information browse over to: http://www.ereader.com/iphonedrm
Table of Contents
Tap or swipe the book page to show the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Select the Start Autoscroll icon (a scrolling, downward pointing arrow) to start the book page scrolling. Tapping the screen again will stop autoscroll. Press and hold your finger on the screen to bring up the autoscroll speed control. Sliding your finger to the down arrow will increase the scrolling speed. Sliding your finger to the up arrow will decrease the scrolling speed.
Several different background and text colors (called themes) can be selected when reading an eBook. eReader has a selection of seven built-in themes to choose from. When you start eReader for the first time, the eBook is displayed using the Parchment theme: dark brown text on a parchment colored background, links appear in bright blue, and highlighted text is shaded brown. You can choose which theme to use from the list of built-in themes on the settings screen.
You can also create a Custom Theme using the settings that you choose. On the Theme screen, press the Edit button and then select Add New Theme. Select a color for the text, links, selections, and background by clicking the corresponding color block, choosing a new color from the color picker window, and clicking Save. Give the new theme a name and press the Save button. The new theme will now be listed under Custom Themes.
Themes can be assigned for both the Daylight and Night Themes. The Night Theme defaults to the van Gogh theme and has more commonly been called the Inverse screen. The Night Theme can be triggered from the settings screen and by selecting its icon (an 'I' in a square) from the toolbar.
Book Details Display and Editing
While reading a book, tap the "Book Info" icon in the header bar (italic 'i' to the right of the book title) to bring up a display of the book's details. The book details displayed include: title, author, copyright, publisher, ISBN, cover art, description, and category. Pressing the Edit button allows the user to edit any of these values and save it. Several categories have already been defined for the user: Romance, Suspense & Thrillers, Science Fiction, and Mystery & Detectives. The user can also edit these categories or add their own. Books in the eReader bookshelf can then be sorted according to these categories.
Text Formatting Settings
The settings screen allows you to select l text formatting options such as margins, line spacing and justification.

Purchase eBooks from eReader.com or Fictionwise.com on Device
You may want to consider setting Auto-Lock on your device (Settings, General) to at least 2 or 3 minutes while reading eBooks so the screen doesn't blank out prematurely. For maximum battery life, you should consider setting Brightness to the minimum comfortable level. Reading time on iPod touch is 4.5 to 15 hours depending on the brightness setting. At 30% brightness (which is comfortable for most people reading indoors) you can expect 9 to 10 hours on iPod touch, plenty enough for a coast-to-coast flight! We are performing tests on iPhone 3G right now. So far the results are that it is equal to or better than the iPod touch in battery life. You can even listen to music while reading. In our tests so far we have found that if you are using reasonable volume settings this only decreases battery life by about 10%.
Many people have had trouble selecting the links, footnotes or sidebars that can appear in eReader books. To address this problem, we have made the tap targets larger for these "links". Also, if you are reading a book that contains many links that you plan on following, we recommend setting your "Page Turn Gesture" to "Swipe" and setting the option for "When Selecting Text" to "Do Nothing". This will make it so the reader will not confuse tapping to select a link for any of the other gestures such as turning pages or selecting text.
This latest version of eReader for iPhone OS devices has added many of the features most requested by our customers. We are very proud of this release and feel these features round out the application nicely! We'll be making more enhancements over the coming months.
