| TITLE: | Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy by Michael Sims |
| DESCRIPTION: | Its the oldest story on Earth. You relive it every day. So much of our shared daily experience in the world is shaped by the sometimes dramatic, sometimes subtle effects of the Earths spin, its tilt on its axis, the alternation of light and darkness, the waxing and waning of the moon, the seemingly capricious growth of clouds. The ancient rhythm of the day and night was shaping life on Earth before there were even human beings to appreciate it. It rules our bodies and weather and calendars, and sets the tempo for our work and play. Each of us awakens each day to relive this primordial narrative. With his signature blend of science and poetry, history and mythology, Michael Sims serves as tour guide on an unforgettable journey through the wonders of an ordinary day, from dawn to nighttime. Long before we had the tools of knowledge to explain what we observed in the skies overhead, we built mythologies and folklore around these occurrences, immortalized them in poetry and art, created special places for them in our collective imagination and even our language. In Apollos Fire, Sims explores the celestial events that form our days, fusing lively explanations of these phenomena with a richly layered history of what they meant to us before we knew how they worked. He explains the colors of sunrise, the characteristics of shadow, the mysteries of twilight. Characters in this vital drama include Galileo watching sunrise on the moon, Eratosthenes measuring the Earth with a noontime shadow, and Edgar Allan Poe figuring out why the night sky is dark instead of glowing with the light of a million suns. Our story ranges from the movie High Noon to Darwin's plant experiments, from The Time Machine to the afternoon rise in air pollution. In the witty and elegant style that has earned him the designation science raconteur, Sims weaves a dazzling array of strands into a single tapestry of daily experience--and makes the oldest story on Earth new again. |

| TITLE: | Cowboy Christmas Audio Double-Feature: Gunsmoke & Roy Rogers Show [The Audio Archive with Bill Mills] by Bill Mills |
| DESCRIPTION: | Cowboy Christmas Audio Double-Feature: Two Complete Radio Adventures Plus Special Commentary! During the years now known to Old Time Radio (OTR) fans as the Golden Age of Radio listeners could expect to hear special guests and holiday sketches on their favorite programs. Even the western shows and cowboy stars of the day could be counted on to show the holiday spirit, especially at Christmas time. This Audio Archive presentation showcases two such Christmas episodes from two of radio's most popular western programs; "GUNSMOKE" and "THE ROY ROGERS SHOW", both from December 1952. The radio series "GUNSMOKE", was concieved as an 'adult western'. It first aired on the CBS radio network April 26, 1952 and starred vertran voice actor William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillion. Roy Rogers, starred in over 100 movies and had long been known as "The King of the Cowboys" when he began the radio program "THE ROY ROGERS SHOW" in November 1944. Considered by many to be the best of the 'singing cowboys' Roy Rogers became a matinee idol and American legend. He exemplified the best qualities of the good hearted, but two fisted, cowboy heros of film fame. In the first show of this "Audio Archive Cowboy Christmas Double-Feature", a "Gunsmoke" episode originally aired Decemeber 20, 1952 entitled "The Christmas Story", we find Marshal Dillon stranded on Christmas eve forty miles from Dodge City, on foot and carrying his saddle. He meets up with a mysterious stranger, and his tired old sway-back nag, while trying to make his way back to town. Chester, Doc Adams and Miss Kitty are waiting at the 'Texas Trail' saloon for Mr. Dillon to join the holiday festivities, but will Matt be able to get home for Christmas? In the second 'Cowboy Christmas' show, originally aired December 25, 1952 and titled "The Night Before The Night Before Christmas", Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and sidekick Pat Brady try to save the day for a five year old girl whose father has been wrongly jailed for burglarizing the Mineral City general store on Christmas eve. The episode features the song "Go To Sleep My Little Buckeroo", a classic example of the musical duets for which Roy and Dale were famous. Each episode is preceded by historical and biographical information about the show and it's stars researched and written by series host Bill Mills. Produced for REB Audio Books by Bill Mills. Its neighbors are understandably wary of further expansion, there are questions about how Vond's magic became so potent, and so on. Most of the World, though, doesn't care--Vond is off there in the southeastern corner of the World, far away from anywhere important. But one day a dockworker named Emmis watches a Vondish ship arrive in Ethshar of the Spices and finds himself hired as native guide and aide to someone who claims to be Vond's ambassador plenipotentiary to the overlords of the Hegemony of the Three Ethshars. But who is the Vondish ambassador, really, and what is his true business in Ethshar? And who has followed him to the city? |
