Multimedia: Audio/Video Format Overview:
« Back to Help

ChessWise Multimedia Lectures are designed for PCs, Macintoshes, Pocket PCs, and PDAs with multimedia capabilities. We strongly recommend you try the free video in this series first, before purchasing other videos, to make sure it works on your PC, Mac, or PDA. Click here to try the free video.

Most of the Multimedia Lectures are available for PC and PDA. When you select a format to download from your Fictionwise bookshelf, look for "PC" or "PDA" in the dropdown menu file name. The files for PDAs can be very large and, most likely, you will need to store them on memory cards (e.g., Compact Flash cards) for your device.

Viewing on Personal Computers (PCs)

- Windows Media Player (.wmv)
Download software

- RealOne Player (.rm)
Download software (there is always a free version):

- Flash (.sfw and .html)
Flash is actually two files--a flash file (.swf) and an HTML page it plays on. These files come together in a ZIP file.
Download software (plays in browser)

- MP3 (.mp3)
Audio only. View game using PGN chess viewer (see below).
Download software (there are many MP3 players, this is a good one)

- PGN (.pgn)
This is chess notation format which allows chess software programs to play through games. You can, therefore, view the game using chess software and PGN, while listening to the lecture on MP3 format. Here are two examples of such chess programs:

* ChessBase Light
* PocketChess Desktop Companion

Viewing on Macintosh (Macs)

- Windows Media Player (.wmv)
Download software

- RealOne Player (.rm)
Download software (there is always a free version)

Viewing on Pocket PCs:

Many new generation Pocket PCs can play Windows Media files and Real Media files. We're not going to list all the compatible devices here. Please check the specifications for your device, or test your device's multimedia capabilities before purchasing. We also recommend you update your device's multimedia software. These files can be large, so in most cases you will need to store them on a memory card of some kind. Here are two links:

- Flash (.sfw and .html)
Flash is actually two files--a flash file (.swf) and an HTML page it plays on. These files come together in a ZIP file. Note: This file is larger in screen size than the other versions because Flash on the Pocket PC allows you to scroll. Once this version is loaded, use the scroll bars to put the larger chess diagram in the center of your viewer.
Download software (plays in browser)

- Windows Media Player (.wmv)
Download software

- RealOne Player (.rm)
Download software

Viewing on Palm OS PDAs

Currently, a few Palm OS PDAs have audio/visual capabilities, but many do not. Please check the specifications of your device and test any software before buying. One solution for Palm OS PDAs that do support MP3 playing is to listen to the lecture using the MP3 file while watching the game using a chess software program such as PocketChess (which costs $19.99, free trial available). These files can be large. You probably need to store the files on a memory card.

- RealOne Player (.rm)
RealOne now has an audio only player for Palm OS 5 handhelds (there are other players)
Download software

- PocketChess
Download software

Note: PocketChess will not play PGN, but will play a .PDB version of PGN, which is included as a download option from your bookshelf.
