Distributes eBook Edition of Eidolon Magazine; Top Australian Fiction
Magazine Premiers with Double Issue
18
July 2000 -- Chatham, NJ, USA -- Fictionwise.com and Eidolon Publications
announced today that Fictionwise.com will distribute eBook editions
of Eidolon Magazine in Palm, Rocket, and Acrobat formats. The first
issue is available now from http://www.fictionwise.com. It is the
magazine’s annual double-issue and contains 15 science fiction and
fantasy stories, nearly 90,000 words, by many of Australia’s top
authors. Fictionwise.com is pricing the double issue at USD $9.95,
somewhat less than the newsstand price of the magazine in Australia.
Jeremy Byrnes, Editor of Eidolon Magazine, commented, “The electronic
edition is a major step forward for Eidolon, and we're very pleased
to be working with Fictionwise.com to provide Australia's best genre
writers with such affordable and convenient introduction to an international
audience."
Eidolon
Magazine is a quarterly publication, and is widely recognized as
one of the top semipro science fiction and fantasy publications
in the world.
“The
term semi-pro is misleading in the case of Eidolon, and especially
for this double-issue,” commented Stephen Pendergrast, co-publisher
of Fictionwise.com. “This issue contains original stories by authors
such as Damien Broderick, Stephen Dedman, Sean Williams, Cecily
Scutt, and many others who are recognized not only in Australia
but throughout the world as leading pros in the field.”
Many
readers in the United States are not exposed to talented authors
in other countries, especially Australian authors. In Australian
literary circles the effect is called the “tyranny of distance,”
which makes it hard for these authors to break through to audiences
across the sea. Postage rates make it less economical for people
in the United States and other countries to obtain the Eidolon print
edition. Overseas postage adds significant cost for people outside
of Australia, so few people are willing to take a chance on a subscription
of such a magazine sight-unseen.
“We
hope the thousands of registered members at Fictionwise.com will
take this opportunity to sample some of the finest genre authors
in Australia,” remarked Pendergrast. “I’m sure many of our readers
will discover that they are some of the most creative in the world,
and this issue in particular has many terrific stories. I spent
hours reading it when Jeremy first sent us the proofs; I couldn’t
put it down. There is a broad range of stories here, from fairy
tale fantasy to mainstream SF to frightening views of future dystopia.
There’s plenty of great fiction here for everyone.”
In
the distribution agreement between Fictionwise.com and Eidolon Publications,
each eBook edition will be released approximately simultaneously
with the paper publication in Australia. Each eBook issue will be
removed from sale when the following issue becomes available. Fictionwise.com
will be the exclusive distributor for eBook editions of Eidolon
Magazine during the term of the agreement. Regular issues will cost
$5.49 and double issues such as the premier eBook issue will be
priced at $9.95.
