Jack Williamson 2001 Hugo Nominated Work Available as Free eBook

May 29, 2001 - Chatham, NJ - Fictionwise.com announced today the launch of science fiction grandmaster Jack Williamson's 2001 Hugo Award nominated novella as a free eBook. The independent epublisher now has four 2001 Hugo Award nominated works available for free and plans to release more such eBooks in the coming months.

Jack Williamson is one of the most prolific and honored science fiction authors of all time. In 1976, the Science Fiction Writers of America gave him the prestigious Grand Master of Science Fiction Award. During his writing career, which began in 1929, his work has won the Hugo, Nebula, Skyland, Bram Stoker, and World Fantasy Awards, among others.

The Williamson Hugo nominated story, titled "The Ultimate Earth," depicts a time far after all life on Earth has been annihilated from asteroid impacts. Human colonies, however, are thriving independently on planets throughout the galaxy. Centuries later, Earth has been terraformed and re-populated when historian Sander Pen makes a startling discovery beneath the surface of the moon: a domed station built by Earth's original humans--and the tissue cells left frozen in the cryostat are still alive.

Author Michael Swanwick wrote that Williamson's story achieves "a genuine by-God sense of wonder. New writers could do a lot worse than to study this story and imitate its virtues."

"The Ultimate Earth" will be available for free for a limited time.

The other free 2001 Hugo nominated works at Fictionwise are:
"Kaddish for the Last Survivor" by Michael A. Burstein;
"The Elephants on Neptune" by Mike Resnick;
"Redchapel" by Mike Resnick

These eBooks are available to registered Fictionwise.com members (registration is free) for a limited time. To register at Fictionwise, go to: /servlet/mw?a=v&t=register.htm

The Hugo Awards are among the most prestigious literary awards and are presented annually by the World Science Fiction Society (http://www.worldcon.org). Earlier this year, Fictionwise offered 2001 Nebula Award nominated works as free eBooks.
