After some casual remarks, Jared asked, "How's your new book coming, Nick?" Nick glanced at Jared, a slight frown on his handsome face. Luz, who was walking between the two men, said, "If you guys are going to talk shop, why don't you walk together?" and shifted to Jared's other side.
Jared nodded his thanks to his wife, who now gazed with pleasure at the deserted beach, at the surf rolling in, at the pelicans flying just above the waves, fishing, and the gulls veering sharply this and that way. It was so early that the sun was still a huge orange-gold ball fairly close to the horizon, and Luz looked at the incredible reflections on the ocean, still a blue-grey because the sky didn't yet have the deep-blue tint it would acquire later in the day.
She half-heard Nick's response to Jared's enquiry,"... beginning to wish I hadn't made her an actress--what do I know about actresses? But I need her to be a superb actress later on in the book, when she has to convince a rather unpleasant character that she is totally uninterested in the hero-figure, although he's more of an anti-hero, I would say. And in convincing the creep, she also convinces the hero, who overhears her. Because this book does not have a happy ending." Both Luz and Jared picked up on Nick's disconsolate tone--after all, his own love-story had had a most unhappy ending. Is Nick determined to 'write what you know'? Jared wondered.
"I'm sorry to hear that you believe you've written yourself into a corner," said Jared, with a friendly glance at Nick. "Happened to me more than once, I'm afraid. But you're in luck. You may remember hearing about the revival of my play 'Lure'? Well, at last it's coming off--that is to say, it will continue being performed, but with a different cast, in a different theatre. And the female lead desperately needs rest and recuperation, somewhere warm. So Luz and I were thinking of inviting Iris Leighton." He was interrupted by a startled exclamation from Nick.
"Iris Leighton? But I've seen her many times. She is very good. And she's coming here?" he asked, more animated than Jared and Luz had seen Nick in a very long time.
"Yes, she's very, very good--but after two years with only one day a week off, she is deadly tired. Luz and I are going to invite her to come stay with us--or rather, we'll book a room for her at the Hilton. She'll have lunch and dinner with us--until our friends get to meet her--and then she won't lack for invitations. Can you imagine what Tom will do when he hears that my play's leading lady is staying here?"
