Great Good OK Poor

Janisse wanted to reach out with her mind, envelop her brother with a warm protective veil of an empath, but something about his very being, cold and harsh, made her hold back. She could marginally feel his dark cloud of anguish, had flashes of his sensation, racing wind, an odd ache in his ruined leg, and the thundercloud of pain and madness that was his presence. Beyond this darkness, she knew, there were impenetrable barriers of solitude.

Ahead of them, Danila again broke into a song. Her voice, clear and ringing, rode on the wind, and there was an odd neutral quality to it, natural like a paradox, full of joy and life, and yet carrying a haunting quality. But to Janisse in that moment, it was the most reassuring thing of all. Somewhere far ahead, she felt Erlend's presence, felt him flinch at the sound, but for once, perversely, she was rather glad.

Let him listen--he broods, turning away from life. I can no longer--do anything for him. Therefore--let him listen!
