It was also a way of reviving another old story of mine called "The Small Town Theater Owner" by doing what many other SF writers do, consciously or unconsciously: taking a metaphor and treating it as literal truth. The Hyperballistic Explorers League is one of those ideas that hits you with feverish intensity and makes you wonder why no one else has ever thought it up before. Perhaps someone has. Some readers of the story were infuriated by Margaret Travis and her colleagues. Others took to it as if the Legion of Space and the Time Patrol had been given over to an army of smartass schoolgirls and couldn't wait for a series. One friend takes the whole business of HEL ironically, and that's fine too. How readers take to HEL is their business. All I know is that the Hyperballistic Explorers made the story a whole lot more fun to write. What I liked most about writing 'Last One' resembles that wall of posters in Mr. Thompson's office: putting the trash next to the classic, the juvenile next to the adult, the serious next to the fun. If I don't manage to reconcile them, there's always another story, another show--and preferably it will be a double feature starting next Friday."
